Dermatofibroma

A dermatofibroma is a common, benign skin growth that feels like a small, firm bump within the skin. It is usually brownish, pink, or reddish and often has a slightly raised or dimpled surface. When gently pinched from the sides, it tends to dimple inward, a helpful clue to the diagnosis.

Dermatofibromas most often appear on the lower legs, but they can occur elsewhere. They are more common in adults and may develop after a minor injury to the skin, such as an insect bite or ingrown hair, though the exact cause is not always clear.

These growths are harmless and are not cancerous. They usually stay the same size for years and may be tender if bumped, but they typically do not cause other symptoms.

Treatment is generally not necessary. If a dermatofibroma is irritated, changing, or the diagnosis is uncertain, a dermatologist can evaluate it and discuss removal, keeping in mind that removal leaves a scar.
