Understanding Surgical Dermatology
Dermatologic surgery manages skin conditions through surgical procedures. Many surface lesions, moles, age spots, skin tags, and certain cancers, can be treated by shaving or snipping, liquid nitrogen, laser, or electrical destruction.
For deeper involvement, surgical excision removes a growth and closes the wound with sutures, used for cysts, certain moles, lipomas (fatty tumors), birthmarks, and skin cancers. For larger, recurrent, or sensitive-area cancers, Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate. All procedures are performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting.
