Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common condition that causes flaking, redness, and greasy scale on the scalp, face, and other oily areas.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, long-term skin condition that affects areas rich in oil glands, such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and chest. On the scalp it is often called dandruff, and in infants it is known as cradle cap.

The condition causes flaking, greasy or yellowish scale, redness, and sometimes itching. It tends to come and go, often flaring in cold, dry weather or during periods of stress. A common yeast that lives on the skin, along with oil production and individual skin sensitivity, is thought to play a role.

Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene. Treatment focuses on controlling flares with medicated shampoos, topical antifungal products, and mild anti-inflammatory creams. Most people manage it well with an ongoing routine.

Because the condition is chronic, symptoms may return after treatment stops. A dermatologist can recommend a maintenance plan and rule out other conditions that can look similar, such as psoriasis or eczema.
