Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is a common facial rash that causes clusters of small red bumps and mild scaling, usually around the mouth, and sometimes around the nose or eyes. The skin may feel tender, dry, or slightly burning rather than itchy.

The condition is most common in young and middle-aged women. It has been linked to the use of topical steroid creams on the face, heavy face creams, certain toothpastes, and some cosmetics, though the exact cause is not always clear.

A key first step is often to stop applying steroid creams and heavy products to the area, since these can make the rash worse even if they seem to help at first. This can cause a temporary flare before the skin improves.

Treatment usually involves simplifying the skincare routine along with prescription topical or oral medications. Perioral dermatitis can be persistent, so working with a dermatologist helps clear it and prevent it from returning.
