Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating beyond what the body needs to cool itself, often affecting the underarms, hands, and feet.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which a person sweats much more than the body needs for temperature control. The sweating is often unpredictable and can interfere with daily activities, work, and social comfort.
The most commonly affected areas are the underarms, palms, soles, and face. In many people the cause is unknown and the tendency runs in families. In some cases excessive sweating is related to another medical condition or medication, which is why an evaluation is helpful.
Several effective treatments are available. These range from prescription-strength antiperspirants and prescription wipes to oral medications, botulinum toxin injections that temporarily block the nerves that trigger sweat glands, and other in-office procedures.
Hyperhidrosis is common and treatable, and it is not a reflection of hygiene or fitness. A dermatologist can identify the pattern, rule out underlying causes, and match a treatment to the affected area and severity.
