Folliculitis

Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicles, the small openings in the skin from which hairs grow. It appears as clusters of small red bumps or whiteheads around follicles and can be itchy, tender, or mildly painful. It can occur anywhere hair grows, including the beard area, scalp, chest, back, and legs.

It is often caused by bacteria, but it can also result from yeast, ingrown hairs, friction from clothing, shaving, or spending time in a poorly maintained hot tub. Blocked follicles from heavy products or heavy sweating can also contribute.

Mild folliculitis often clears on its own with gentle skin care, warm compresses, and avoiding shaving or friction over the area. Keeping the skin clean and wearing loose clothing can help it settle.

If the bumps spread, keep returning, or become painful, a dermatologist can determine the underlying cause and prescribe appropriate topical or oral treatment. Identifying the trigger, such as a shaving technique or a specific product, helps prevent it from coming back.
